We are proud to announce that the Village Halloween Parade is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Arturo Di Modica first conceived of the Charging Bull as a way to celebrate the can-do spirit of America and especially New York, where people from all other the world could come regardless of their origin or circumstances, and through determination and hard work overcome every obstacle to become successful. It’s this symbol of virility and courage that Arturo saw as the perfect antidote to the Wall Street crash of 1986.Arturo worked on the now world-famous Charging Bull for over two years at his studio on Crosby Street in the Soho district of Manhattan. With its diverse elements, the artist intends to make viewers’ bodily experiences a meaningful part of the installation. For example, a series of works on paper—quirkily libidinous riffs on modernist abstraction—makes emphatic use of the brush, playing off the idea that the implement is an extension of the hand. The Charging Bull stands there to this day, visited by millions of tourists, a talisman for Wall Street traders, and a source of pride for all New York City residents.
This year, we are featuring one as Grand Marshal, recording artist, Anjelica. hundreds of PUPPETS, 35 BANDS of Different Types of Music, DANCERS and ARTISTS, and thousands of other New Yorkers in costumes of their own creation in …the nation’s most wildly creative public participatory event in the greatest city in the world! For ONLY those in costume is on 6th Avenue at Canal Street between pm and pm.To the artist, the eyes are unwelcome witnesses, like a “memory following you,” prodding viewers to think about personal wrongs committed, and to confront what they might be failing to acknowledge or else have willfully forgotten. In , a tree trunk covered with the bloodred crushed bodies of cochineal insects is skewered on a wrought-iron bar.
The next day the Charging Bull was news all around the world, and enormous crowds of excited onlookers and media surrounded the mysterious sculpture that had come from no one knew where.
